Build Quality:
The Ducky Shine 6 is an extremely sturdy keyboard.
During our testing, upon trying to use all our strength to flex the keyboard, the keyboard continued to keep its shape and did not flex a single bit. This is firstly due to its strongly enforced plastic, both sturdy and tough it will surely be strong enough to protect this keyboard from a drop or two.
The housing of the Ducky Shine 6 is also very tough in its own right. During our testing, we placed the keyboard in a fridge to bring its temperature down and after 5 minutes, immediately took it out into a hot room.
However, even with the sudden change in temperature, the kyeboard still functioned well and the keys all worked with the outer shell also keeping its shape.
This is due to the metal plates beneath the keyboards housing, keeping the keyboard from contracting too much when placed in cold environments so as to not allow damage to the circuit and switches as well as prevent the switches from expanding too much in a hot environment and thus, keeping the switches safe and functional.
Backlighting:
The backlighting of the Shine 6 simply blew us away. Among all the RGB keyboards we have tested so far from brands such as cooler master and corsair, this keyboard is the best of its class, only losing to the razer blackwidow keyboard in its lighting. Firstly, this keyboard uses cherry's under keyswitch design, where the LED itself is placed under a transparent plastic switch housing.
This allows for light to shine through while reducing the chance of electrostatic discharge(ESD) damaging the switches and rendering them useless. However, many keyboards like corsair's K70, with this design have shown that the downside to this new housing design is that the LED's become too dim and the RGB lighting becomes underwhelming.
However, Ducky has proven us wrong by showing us that although the keyboard uses the under switch design, it could still compete with companies like Razer, who use the old design. The Shine 6 delivers very bright and vibrant colours, with almost no loss in the lighting itself when the lights shine through the plastic housing. This is mostly due to the white backplate used by ducky, which causes the lights to reflect off it, producing a more bright
and vibrant lighting experience.
Overall, the shine 6 stands out in this category and is undoubtedly, the best RGB keyboard with an under switch design.
Keyswitches
For keyswitches, the Ducky Shine 6 comes in 3 keyswitches. They are the cherry MX reds, blues and browns and the switches themselves feel amazing. The German manufactured switches provide different feedbacks depending on your switch type. MX reds are linear in style, browns are a mix of linear and clicky and mx blues are clicky switches.
For our keyboard, we got Cherry MX red switches, which actually provides no tactile feedback but has a lower actuation force of 45g. Compared to Razer's orange switches, the keyswitches on the Ducky shine 6 outperforms the razer orange by a landslide. With ducky's PBT keycaps, the keys provide a soothing experience. Typing on the switches for 3 hours did not cause any discomfort whatsoever on my fingers and allowed me to get more done in that period than any other keyboard tested before.
Overall, the switch and keycap combo on this keyboard makes it top in class.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, the Shine 6 from Ducky gets a 10/10 from us. Overall, although you do pay a pretty premium price for this keyboard, the amount of features you are getting, such as the amazing RGB lighting with ESD protection due to the new under switch design, great German manufactured Cherry MX switches and the tough and sturdy housing and backplates which endured multiple stress tests,
The Ducky Shine 6 will definitely go down as one of if not the best keyboard in 2018.
